Bats at the Beach

Featured Classroom Activity:

Turn your classroom ceiling into a bat cave
(relates to art, math and science)

Science

Research:
• What kinds of foods do different kinds of bats eat?
(Imaginative activity: write a menu for a bat café)

• How many different kinds of bats are there in the U.S.? In the world? Draw pictures of as many kinds as you can.

• How can bats fly at night without bumping into things? Imagine yourself as a bat: how would it feel to fly like that?

Things to Make:
• Make a boat for a bat from a hot dog or french fry container, or from a styrofoam soup cup. How much weight will it hold?

• Make a pair of oversized “bat ears” by cutting out the sides of two 2-liter soda bottles (you may want to put tape on the cut edges). Have students hold the open, cap end of two “bat ears” to their own ears. How has their hearing changed? Is it easier or harder to hear soft sounds? (you might also experiment with different shapes of “bat ears,” using different materials, to see which capture the most sound. Why does this work?
