Meet the Book Bats
and click on their photos to read their travel journals.

green_bat
Green Bat was released in Riverside, IL, home of the real-life library seen in the book, the Riverside Public Library. Green Bat’s route depends on the kindness of librarians.

red bat
Red Bat was released in Duxbury, MA, after the national launch of the book at the Duxbury Free Library on September 28, 2009. Red Bat’s route also depends on the kindness of librarians.

blue bat
Blue Bat was released in Anaheim, CA, following the ALA 2008 Midsummer Conference. Blue Bat’s route is set, and is based on randomly-drawn entries submitted by conference-goers.

The bats in Bats at the Library enjoy a night of reading fun
with the help of a librarian, who leaves a window open.

. . . and now one of these three handmade Book Bats might visit your library!*

*Please note: though I wish I could promise a visit, the itineraries for Red Bat and Blue Bat are determined by librarians
passing them on to other librarians, and are not in my control.

They want to travel to as many libraries in the U.S. as they can during 2008 and 2009. The Book Bats have been “released” at selected Bats at the Library book events, each with a customized travel case, a copy of Bats at the Library, and a passport.

As in Bats at the Library, what happens next is up to librarians.

The bats will travel from librarian to librarian, following a chain of acquaintance and friendship —and where they’ll go, nobody knows!

At each library, a librarian will be asked to send a digital photo to this website showing the bat having fun somewhere in the library, and sign the bat’s travel log before giving or sending the bat on to a different librarian, anywhere in the United States.

If you get a call from a fellow librarian asking if you want to host one of the Book Bats, please help it continue its travels as quickly as possible!

Participating libraries will be entered in a random drawing to win a personal visit and book reading/signing by Brian Lies in 2010.
