OK. It’s not the easiest name in the world.
Q: How do you pronounce “Lies?”
A: We pronounce it like “Lees” (rhymes with “cheese”). Some of my relatives pronounce it “leese.”
Q: Where is it from?
A: My great-great-great grandfather and his family came to the USA from the small European country of Luxembourg, and they brought the name with them.
Q: Can’t you change it, or at least change the spelling?
A: By the time I was old enough to change my name legally, I’d defended it too much to give it up. Now I think it’s fun to have a name that confuses everybody.
An added bonus to a name like Lies: it’s kept me out of politics!
